There are a number of free hiking apps available that use your phone’s GPS capabilities to track, map, save and share your hiking routes.
From MayMyFitness, the creators of such hits as MapMyRun and MapMyRide comes MapMyHike. It’s a really easy to use free app that tracks and measures your progress during your hike and you can save your route when you’re done. You can share your routes with others, or keep them private.
You can upgrade to a paid version of MapMyHike but you get all the basics in the free version. It’s a pretty good hiking app.
While specifically designed for runners, you can use this free app to track your adventures in the hills, play your favourite music hits and connect with Facebook if you’re so inclined.
Similar to MapMyHike, this free app tracks, maps, saves and shares your hiking route. You can try it and its basic functions for free.
Which one do I use?
I use MapMyHike. I find that the GPS is more or less on par with my Garmin Forerunner 405 GPS watch.
